Chiral models of composite axions and accidental Peccei-Quinn symmetry

چکیده
We introduce a class of composite axion models that provide natural solution to the strong CP problem, and possibly account for observed dark matter abundance. The QCD arises as Nambu-Goldstone boson (NGB) from dynamics chiral gauge theory with strongly-interacting confining SU(N) factor weakly-interacting U(1), no fundamental scalar fields. Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is accidental all mass scales are generated dynamically. analyze specific where PQ broken only by operators dimension 12 or higher. also classify several other can be potentially protected up 15 18 level. Our framework easily extended scenario Standard Model (SM) unified into simple group, we discuss case non-supersymmetric SU(5) unification. GUT predict existence additional pseudo NGBs, parametrically lighter than scales, which could have an impact on cosmological evolution leave observable signatures. clarify selection rules under higher-dimensional PQ-violating generate potential in IR, discussion discrete symmetries associated number domain walls. These results general interest based QCD-like group.

Axions and a Gauged Peccei-Quinn Symmetry
The axion solution to the strong CP problem requires an anomalous global U(1) symmetry. We show that the existence of such a symmetry is a natural consequence of an extra dimension in which a gauged U(1) is spontaneously broken on one of two branes, leaving an accidental global symmetry on the other brane. Depending on where the standard model matter lives, the resulting axion can be either the...
متن کاملFlatons and Peccei-quinn Symmetry
We study in detail a supersymmetric Peccei-Quinn model, which has a DFSZ and a KSVZ version. The fields breaking the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry correspond to flat directions (flaton fields) and have unsuppressed couplings when PQ symmetry is unbroken. The models have interesting particle physics phenomenology. The PQ scale is naturally generated through radiative corrections; also, in the DFSZ ...
متن کاملNatural Μ-term with Peccei-quinn Symmetry
The generalized Higgs mass term NH1H2 of the supersymmetric standard model is used to implement the Peccei-Quinn Symmetry to solve the strongCP problem. Then supersymmetry breaking can generate the Higgs mass parameter μ of order m3/2 through soft-breaking parameters. This kind of extension contains extra light fields of the axion supermultiplet whose dominant coupling may come from the supersy...
متن کاملWIMP Dark Matter and Neutrino Mass from Peccei-Quinn Symmetry
The Peccei-Quinn anomalous global U(1)PQ symmetry is important for solving the strong CP problem with a cosmologically relevant axion. We add to this the simple (but hitherto unexplored) observation that it also has a residual Z2 symmetry which may be responsible for a second component of dark matter, i.e. an absolutely stable weakly interacting singlet scalar. This new insight provides a theor...
متن کاملIs There a Peccei - Quinn Phase Transition ?
The nature of axion cosmology is usually said to depend on whether the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaks before or after inflation. The PQ symmetry itself is believed to be an accident, so there is not necessarily a symmetry during inflation at all. We explore these issues in some simple models, which provide examples of symmetry breaking before and after inflation, or in which there is no symm...
